This Clara dress in Bluebell is one of those maternity pieces that’s cleverly versatile – dressed up you could even wear it to a wedding, but it wouldn’t look out of place at a casual picnic or even worn with a little jacket for work. Made from jersey acetate and also lined with a soft jersey, it’s comfortable and stretchy and will look great whatever stage your bump is at and the little hint of a cap sleeve is very flattering.
We love this length to get the most wear out of it and this colour suits almost everyone. However it’s also available in black, mocha and in a more formal longer length.
This gorgeous Bea Tan leather changing bag by Sugarjack is cleverly disguised as a genuinely covertable handbag. Much better than boring black, the tan colour is very versatile and goes with almost anything. We love the handles or shoulder strap choice and several zipped compartments.
It seems to have a huge reduction on at the moment but we’re not sure how long that will last as it’s £150 down from £239. Might have to snap this one up quick! www.sugarjack.com
Since Hotmilk came on the scene a few years ago they have consistently been one of the best maternity and nursing bras providers. You wouldn’t guess most of their bras were maternity and nursing and well as looking pretty and sexy they wash very well so will easily last more than one pregnancy and beyond. This Chic Pink nursing bra can also be worn during pregnancy and provides shape and support without underwire.
Our top tip is not to buy ‘maternity’ bras, but buy ‘nursing bras’ or ‘maternity and nursing bras’. These can also be worn during pregnancy but you get the added use of the months after birth too.
At £33 this is a beautiful maternity essential that won’t stretch the purse strings too much. www.figleaves.com
We are just loving this Vienna print top from Isabella Oliver. At £89 it’s not a cheap buy but, hey at least it means it qualifies for free delivery. This top will last all the way through pregnancy and for the few months afterwards. Perfect for a summer pregnancy too and can be worn casually with jeans or with the co-ordinating print skirt for a great work outfit for a change from your black jersey wrap maternity dress (we know you have one!). www.isabellaoliver.com/uk/
If you’re a first time mum the thought of collating a maternity wardrobe might be a bit daunting. When you’re only 8 weeks pregnant it’s difficult to know what will look good when you’re rocking a big bump.
Sometimes in the early stages it can be easier to look round your usual (non-maternity) shops and pick out tops you’ll be able to wear with maternity jeans that will work with a bump.
You’re looking for nothing too fitted around the bust as that’s likely to grow too. Ideally you want something of a reasonable length as a big bump will make the top ride up at the front, although you could always wear try wearing a long length vest underneath as your bump gets bigger. Swing blouses and t-shirts can be good and French Connection (acid chevron blouse pictured above) can be good for this sort of thing along with Whistles and Jigsaw. Even if these items don’t quite fit you at your bump’s peak they will be good for the build up to it and also in those post natal months.
Don’t forget to consider the seasons you’ll be pregnant in when you’re buying. No point buying over indulging in too many maternity woolies if you’re 12 weeks pregnant in March, focus on the summer stuff!
